What Does One Wear To An Exorcism?

Next week, the Governor of Illinois will sign the marriage equality law, making the Land of Lincoln the 16th state to make the leap into the 21st century.

Alas, the catholic church still has its feet firmly planted in the 15th century — and its head up its ass. Does that sound harsh? Yeah, no. Read this before you crucify me. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Hawaiians Celebrate Marriage Equality

They’re celebrating a Sweet Sixteen in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With a 30-19 vote in their House just minutes ago, Hawai’i has become the 16th state (including the District of Columbia) to extend marriage equality to its LGBT citizens. This comes just days after Illinois’ legislature made it the 15th state with marriage equality.

The Land of Lincoln and the Aloha State may not have the last word on the matter this month, as the New Mexico Supreme Court is expected to decide within weeks if the Land of Enchantment becomes #17.

What this means is that about 40% of all Americans are now living in states which do not discriminate against LGBT folks who choose to marry. Even more important: with the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” last June, 100% of Americans now live in a nation whose federal government recognizes all marriages. There are not straight marriages or gay marriages. There is simply marriage. And that’s really the beginning, the middle and the end of the argument. Bad day / week / month and year for the haters.

Mahalo Hawai’i!
